Research on the effects of our family-centered approach is an
essential part of The Family Center for Bipolar Disorder's mission. Thus, during the course of
treatment, we assess mood and stress, quality of life, attitude
toward and knowledge of illness, and participation in and attitude
toward treatment with the treating psychiatrist, in patients and
caregivers. In this way, we will be able to identify aspects of
patient and family adjustment that are responsive to treatment, and
aspects that may be in need of enhancement. We will also be able to
advance the discussion of family-centered treatment in the academic
literature on Bipolar Disorder treatment -- where standards for
clinical care are shaped. This work will also form the basis for
the development of our ongoing research program, and our pursuit of
support from private and public research funds.
An upcoming workshop at the 2007 meeting of the American Psychiatric Association
will highlight The Family Center for Bipolar Disorder and its approach to treatment.
