Research

Research on the effects of our family-centered approach is an essential part of The Family Center for Bipolar's mission. Interested patients and family members are invited to participate in our research study. Conducted over the course of a year, the project consists of two phases.

In the first phase, the engagement phase, the patient and his or her loved ones attend six weekly sessions. In these sessions, the clinician will get to know the patient and their close other(s); help them reach a better mutual understanding of their symptoms; encourage them to develop and keep a daily diary; teach communication skills and constructive problem solving; set up a relapse prevention plan; and solidify plans for future family involvement.

In the second phase, the longer-term treatment phase, the clinician and patient will meet every two weeks. Family members will also attend sessions with the clinician and patient every two months. These sessions are intended to focus on identifying issues that have arisen during the time following the engagement period, and addressing them through communication and problem solving.

The patient and close other(s) will also be assessed by the research team on a quarterly basis which will include the completion of questionnaires. There will be a total of up to 11 research visits over the course of one year some of which will feature cognitive testing. After completing the first year, each patient case will be reassessed by the FCB staff regarding further treatment options. Treatment for patients can last indefinitely, as clinically indicated.
