Bumpy and Family
Bumpytm the Bipolar Bear is the new face of the Family C
enter for Bipolar. Born at Beth Israel Medical Center, Bumpy was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder and has been receiving Family-Inclusive Treatment at the Family Center to manage the disorder and maintain a healthy family dynamic. It has been a bumpy road for Bumpy’s family, but thanks to the Bipolar SpecialistsTM at the Family Center Bumpy’s mood has been more stable and the family has learned a lot about the disorder, including how to recognize oncoming episodes through common signs and symptoms, as well as how to identify personal triggers, avoid risk factors and communicate optimally to keep everyone mentally balanced.
In addition to making regular visits to the specialists at the Family Center, Bumpy’s family reads a lot about bipolar disorder and how it affects everyone involved. Their current reading list includes helpful resources and insight into bipolar disorder for patients and family members.

1. How To Stay Mentally Balanced in our Bipolar World is a great resource for anyone taking care of a loved one diagnosed with bipolar disorder. This short booklet offers separate chapters for the caregivers of bipolar children, adolescents, adults, and spouses. Learn how to identify episode triggers, read about techniques to alleviate risk, and become aquiainted with the things to watch out for both in your loved one and yourself.
2. The Family Center Brochure is a great introduction to the center's Family Inclusive Therapy. The staff at the Family Center strongly believes that the support and health of the entire family unit are both necessary components in the successful treatment of bipolar disorder. If you would like additional information or if you are interested in participating in family-inclusive treatment for bipolar disorder, please contact the Family Center for more information.
3) Talking To Families About Mental Illness: What Clinicians Need to Know is a great read for m
ental health professionals who are working with families where one or more people are mentally ill. Loving and caring but often frustrated, family members and caregivers have plenty of questions for the psychiatrists, primary care physicians, and other counselors or therapists who are caring for their mentally ill loved one(s). This book equips mental health professionals with everything they need to know to speak with family members compassionately and effectively, conveying treatment information and answering their questions, while also relieving their anxieties.
Bumpy'sTM credo is Let our Family Help Your FamilyTM, and that's just what we aim to do here at the Family Center for Bipolar.
